RX-78-3 G-3 Gundam
The RX-78-3 G-3 Gundam is a variant of the original RX-78-2 Gundam, introduced in the Mobile Suit Gundam novelizations and Mobile Suit Variations (MSV). The G-3 Gundam was developed by the Earth Federation Forces as an experimental model to test new technologies and improve upon the design of the RX-78-2. While it retained much of the core design of the RX-78-2, the G-3 Gundam incorporated several advancements, most notably the magnet coating system. This system was designed to reduce friction in the joints, enhancing the mobile suit’s agility and mobility, which would become an important feature in future mobile suit designs.
Standing at 18 meters tall and weighing around 43.4 tons, the RX-78-3 G-3 Gundam retained the humanoid structure of its predecessor. Powered by a Minovsky ultracompact fusion reactor, the G-3 Gundam had sufficient energy to power its advanced systems. Its armor was constructed from Luna Titanium, a material known for its superior durability compared to standard alloys. This improvement in armor made the G-3 more resistant to damage, further enhancing its battlefield survivability.
The armament of the G-3 Gundam included a beam rifle, two beam sabers, and a shield, providing it with both ranged and close-quarters combat capabilities. It was also equipped with two 60mm Vulcan guns mounted on its head for anti-infantry defense. The RX-78-3 was capable of deploying a variety of optional weapons, including the hyper bazooka, Gundam hammer, hyper hammer, and super napalm, depending on the mission’s requirements. These options allowed the G-3 Gundam to adapt to various combat scenarios, making it a versatile unit on the battlefield.
One of the standout features of the G-3 Gundam was the Core Block System, which allowed the cockpit to eject and transform into a fighter mode, ensuring pilot safety in case of emergency. Additionally, the G-3 Gundam featured hardpoints for attaching various equipment, such as additional weapons or tools for specialized missions. The magnet coating system also played a significant role in improving its response times and maneuverability, making it more agile than the original RX-78-2.
In the storyline, after the RX-78-2 Gundam was destroyed, Amuro Ray was assigned to pilot the RX-78-3 G-3 Gundam. This mobile suit was used as a testbed for new mobile suit technologies, with its improved features helping to pave the way for future mobile suits in the Universal Century timeline. Although the G-3 Gundam did not see widespread use, its legacy remains influential, representing a crucial step forward in the development of combat technology within the Gundam universe.
