ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam
The ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam is a high-performance prototype mobile suit developed by ZAFT during the Cosmic Era and appears prominently in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED. It was created alongside the Freedom Gundam and is one of the first units equipped with a nuclear-powered engine using a Neutron Jammer Canceller, granting it virtually limitless operational time. The Justice was developed under ZAFT’s “Second Stage” MS development program, with an emphasis on mobility, close-combat performance, and coordinated deployment alongside the Freedom.
The Justice Gundam stands at 18.56 meters tall and weighs 84.58 metric tons. It is powered by a nuclear fission reactor equipped with a Neutron Jammer Canceller, which allows it to bypass the widespread effects of Neutron Jammers deployed across Earth during the war. Its design incorporates Phase Shift Armor, giving it excellent resistance to conventional physical and ballistic attacks.
Justice’s most defining feature is the Fatum-00, a large backpack unit mounted on its back. The Fatum-00 serves both as a flight pack and a sub-flight platform that can detach and operate independently. When docked, it enhances the Justice’s mobility with powerful thrusters; when deployed separately, it provides additional firepower and support in mid-air and space combat. The Justice Gundam is also capable of operating the Fatum-00 like a remote-controlled unit for flanking maneuvers or dual-direction assaults.
In terms of armament, the Justice Gundam is outfitted with a variety of close- and mid-range weapons. These include MA-M20 “Lupus” beam sabers, which can be used individually or combined into a twin-blade double saber; MA-M01 “Lacerta” beam rifle for ranged combat; RQM51 “Bassel” beam boomerangs mounted on its shoulders; and Lupus-class railguns mounted on its hips. It also has head-mounted CIWS (Close-In Weapon System) guns for anti-missile defense and short-range threats.
The Justice Gundam is piloted by Athrun Zala, one of ZAFT’s elite pilots and a key figure in the Cosmic Era conflict. His experience and high compatibility with the suit’s performance allowed him to execute high-speed, high-precision combat tactics, often in coordination with Kira Yamato’s Freedom Gundam. The two units were designed to complement each other, with Freedom excelling in ranged attacks and Justice dominating in close combat and support roles.
The Justice Gundam’s combination of agility, versatility, and advanced systems made it one of the most powerful mobile suits of its time, playing a critical role in the final stages of the Bloody Valentine War and becoming a symbol of ZAFT’s technological superiority.
