ZGMF-X56S/γ Blast Impulse Gundam
The ZGMF-X56S/γ Blast Impulse Gundam is the heavy artillery configuration of the Impulse Gundam, introduced in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny. This variant is formed when the base Impulse unit is outfitted with the Blast Silhouette pack, a dedicated long-range and fire-support equipment set designed for bombardment missions and area suppression. Among the three main Impulse configurations, the Blast Impulse emphasizes raw ranged firepower, giving it a battlefield role similar to that of a mobile heavy weapons platform.
Like all Impulse variants, the Blast Impulse is made up of the Core Splendor, Chest Flyer, and Leg Flyer, which can combine in mid-air or during sortie to quickly enter combat. Once equipped with the Blast Silhouette, the suit gains a distinctive array of powerful weapons and expanded thrusters to support the additional weight and recoil of its artillery systems.
The Blast Impulse’s primary armaments include two large MA-57B beam cannons mounted over the shoulders, capable of sustained high-output firing for area denial and anti-ship strikes. It also carries a pair of M9009B composite missile launchers, located on the side armor, which provide explosive coverage and indirect fire. Additionally, the suit is equipped with two beam javelins, mounted on the back, that can be thrown or used as melee weapons in emergencies—though they are secondary to the suit’s long-range focus.
Standard equipment is preserved, such as the MA-BAR72 high-energy beam rifle, MMI-RG59V expandable shield, MMI-GAU25A CIWS guns, and folding anti-armor knives, offering defensive utility and close-range backup. However, the Blast Impulse trades maneuverability for destructive power; it is not as agile as the Force or Sword configurations but compensates with devastating frontal fire capability.
While rarely used in the series compared to the Force and Sword variants, the Blast Impulse Gundam showcases ZAFT’s strategic use of modular combat systems. It reflects the military doctrine of flexibility and mission-specific deployment, allowing pilots like Shinn Asuka to adapt to evolving combat scenarios. The Blast configuration is best suited for support fire, base sieges, and mid- to long-range battles where overwhelming projectile and beam weaponry can dominate the field.
