PMX-002 Bolinoak Sammahn
The PMX-002 Bolinoak Sammahn is a prototype mobile suit that appeared in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, and it serves as another piece in the series of experimental mobile weapons created by the cunning Newtype, Paptimus Scirocco. Unlike the more combat-oriented mobile suits in Scirocco’s portfolio, such as the PMX-000 Messala, the Bolinoak Sammahn was designed with a primary focus on reconnaissance, surveillance, and electronic warfare. Its role in the Gryps Conflict was to gather intelligence and provide support for Scirocco’s strategic operations, aligning with his vision of superior Newtype-controlled mobile suits.
The Bolinoak Sammahn is equipped with a range of advanced technologies designed to optimize its reconnaissance capabilities. Its most striking feature is its head and forearms, which house a variety of surveillance equipment, including sensors and data-gathering devices. These systems allowed it to operate in stealth and perform high-level reconnaissance missions without being easily detected by enemy forces. The mobile suit was also intended to disrupt enemy communications and perform electronic warfare tasks, positioning it as a vital asset for information-gathering in the ongoing conflict.
Despite its specialized nature, the Bolinoak Sammahn was equipped with weaponry to protect itself when necessary. It featured shoulder-mounted 3-tube rocket launchers, which could be used for indirect fire, and its shield was multifunctional, capable of deploying beam sabers, a beam tomahawk, and a pincer/grappling unit. These tools provided it with a certain level of offensive capability, though its primary function remained espionage and support rather than direct combat.
The Bolinoak Sammahn’s most notable pilot was Sarah Zabiarov, who was one of the loyalists to Paptimus Scirocco. Sarah, deeply devoted to Scirocco, was tragically lost when she chose to sacrifice herself to protect him. This heroic act led to the destruction of the Bolinoak Sammahn during the final stages of the Gryps Conflict, marking the end of this unique mobile suit’s brief but significant involvement in the war.
Though the Bolinoak Sammahn met its demise in Zeta Gundam, its legacy continued to live on in the extended Gundam universe. In the Mobile Suit Gundam F90: Fastest Formula manga, a modified version of the Bolinoak Sammahn appears, used for a different purpose—data theft operations. This further demonstrates the mobile suit’s adaptability and enduring influence in the field of electronic warfare, continuing the legacy of Scirocco’s pioneering work in mobile suit design.
In the grand scheme of Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, the PMX-002 Bolinoak Sammahn is an intriguing and lesser-known example of the series’ diverse array of mobile suits. It reflects the creative breadth of the franchise, demonstrating that not all mobile suits are designed for straightforward combat; some, like the Bolinoak Sammahn, are built for specialized roles that expand the tactical possibilities in the war-torn world of Gundam.
