RMS-179 GM II Semi-Striker

The RMS-179 GM II Semi-Striker is a modified version of the standard RMS-179 GM II, developed by the Earth Federation Forces during UC 0096 for close-combat missions. This mobile suit was assembled using spare parts from older models, which reflects the Federation’s need to adapt and make the best use of available resources during the tumultuous post-war era. The name “Semi-Striker” comes from its design modifications that give it visual similarities to the RGM-79FP GM Striker, particularly its enhanced shoulder armor and the inclusion of the twin beam spear, a specialized melee weapon.

Standing at 18.1 meters tall and weighing approximately 57.5 metric tons, the GM II Semi-Striker maintains the performance parameters of the original GM II, featuring a Minovsky-type ultracompact fusion reactor producing 1,518 kW of power. The mobile suit’s propulsion system includes four main rocket thrusters and ten vernier thrusters, allowing it to achieve effective maneuverability. Its armor combines titanium alloy ceramic composite with Gundarium alloy, offering a good balance of protection while ensuring mobility. The GM II Semi-Striker retains the GM II’s detection range of 8,800 meters, allowing it to perform effectively in combat situations.

The armament of the GM II Semi-Striker is tailored for close-quarters combat, making it an ideal choice for swift, direct engagements. It is equipped with a pair of 60mm vulcan guns for rapid-fire suppression, a beam saber for close combat, and a small forearm-mounted shield made of Gundarium alloy for defense. The primary weapon, however, is the twin beam spear, an extendable pole-arm derived from the RX-78-2 Gundam’s beam javelin. This versatile weapon has beam sabers at both ends, allowing it to be used in various configurations such as a rod or scythe, depending on the combat scenario. For ranged combat, the GM II Semi-Striker can optionally be equipped with a beam rifle or a bazooka, providing additional firepower when needed.

The GM II Semi-Striker made its debut in Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, where it was used in the defense of Torrington Base against Zeon remnants. Though it was swiftly defeated by the MS-08TX/S Efreet Schneid in the battle, the Semi-Striker’s design reflects the Federation’s ingenuity and adaptability, allowing them to create a capable close-combat unit from existing mobile suit technology. This model embodies the blending of Federation engineering with enhancements inspired by earlier mobile suit designs, showcasing the Federation’s ability to adapt to the evolving needs of combat while making use of available resources.
