Expelled from Paradise

Expelled from Paradise (楽園追放) is a 2014 Japanese animated science fiction film directed by Seiji Mizushima and written by Gen Urobuchi. Set in the distant future of 2700, humanity has left Earth and transitioned into digital forms, living in a vast space station called DEVA. The story follows Angela Balzac, a security agent from DEVA, who is tasked with tracking down a hacker known as “Frontier Setter” that has breached their system. To pursue the hacker, Angela is sent to Earth in a physical body, where she teams up with Dingo, a human agent living on the planet’s surface. Together, they uncover shocking secrets about both the digital society of DEVA and the wasteland of Earth.

The film explores deep themes such as identity, the meaning of humanity, freedom, and the nature of existence, questioning what it means to be human in a digitally governed world. With its unique blend of 2D and 3D animation, Expelled from Paradise delivers a visually stunning experience, though some critics noted that its narrative and character designs may not appeal to everyone. The film has garnered attention for its philosophical depth and is set to be expanded with a sequel, Rakuen Tsuihō: Liberated from Paradise, announced for release in 2026.
