Mobile Suit Gundam UC: One of Seventy Two

Mobile Suit Gundam UC: One of Seventy Two is a 2013 short film set in the Universal Century, specifically in U.C. 0095. This 10-minute G-DOME experience, directed by Kazuhiro Furuhashi, serves as a prelude to Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn. The story centers on a combat evaluation between two advanced Unicorn Gundams—the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam 02 Banshee and the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam 03 Phenex. The evaluation turns into a real battle when Federation intelligence detects a Neo Zeon fleet approaching the area, leading to a competition to destroy Neo Zeon mobile suits. During the battle, the Banshee’s NT-D system activates, and the Phenex’s limiters are deactivated, leading to a psycho-frame resonance phenomenon that causes chaos, ultimately resulting in the deaths of Federation advisers.

The film is significant for providing background on the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam 03 Phenex and briefly touches on the Gundam Unicorn narrative. The title “One of Seventy Two” likely references the Phenex’s designation, inspired by the “Ars Goetia,” a section of the Lesser Key of Solomon listing seventy-two demons. While it is not widely distributed, One of Seventy Two adds depth to the Gundam Unicorn universe and was later expanded upon in the Phoenix Hunting novel and mentioned in Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative.
