RX-78GP02A Gundam “Physalis”

The RX-78GP02A Gundam “Physalis” is a formidable mobile suit introduced in Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory. Developed by Anaheim Electronics for the Earth Federation Forces, the GP02A was designed as a prototype tactical nuclear assault unit. Its primary mission was to serve as a deterrent against nuclear threats, particularly in the aftermath of the One Year War. The mobile suit was equipped with a nuclear-capable weapon, the AE/ZIM.G-BAZ-0186-A Atomic Bazooka, capable of launching a Mark-82 nuclear warhead. This weapon was mounted on the right shoulder, with the barrel and firing mechanism stored in the shield when not in use. The GP02A’s design emphasized durability and firepower over speed and agility, reflecting its role as a strategic weapon rather than a conventional combat unit.

Standing at 18.5 meters tall and weighing 83 metric tons, the RX-78GP02A is heavily armored with Luna Titanium alloy, providing substantial protection against both conventional and nuclear attacks. Its propulsion system includes rocket thrusters with a total output of 155,200 kg, enabling the mobile suit to achieve a 180° turning time of 1.1 seconds. Standard armaments include two 60mm vulcan guns mounted in the head for close-range defense and two beam sabers stored in the hip armor for melee combat. The GP02A also features a large shield, the NR-Sh-02-RX/S-00013, which serves multiple purposes: it provides defense against enemy fire, stores the atomic bazooka’s components, and contains a nitrogen cooling system to protect the mobile suit from the intense heat generated by its nuclear weapon.

In the storyline, the RX-78GP02A was stolen by Anavel Gato of the Delaz Fleet during Operation Stardust and used to launch a nuclear strike against the Federation’s naval review on Konpei Island. This act of aggression led to a confrontation with the RX-78GP01Fb Gundam “Zephyranthes” Full Burnern, resulting in both mobile suits being destroyed. Despite its limited use, the RX-78GP02A “Physalis” remains a significant example of the Federation’s efforts to develop advanced mobile suits capable of deploying nuclear weapons, marking a pivotal moment in the Universal Century timeline.
