RGC-80 GM Cannon
The RGC-80 GM Cannon is a mobile suit designed by the Earth Federation Forces during the One Year War, intended to provide long-range artillery support on the battlefield. As a variant of the mass-produced RGM-79 GM, the GM Cannon shares many of its basic design features but is equipped with heavier weaponry and additional modifications to enhance its artillery capabilities. The most prominent feature of the GM Cannon is its 240mm shoulder-mounted rocket cannon, designed for providing powerful support fire against enemy forces, whether they are other mobile suits or ground targets. This heavy artillery weapon is complemented by 60mm vulcan guns mounted on the head, providing additional close-range firepower and defense against smaller threats.
In terms of design, the GM Cannon is built with reinforced leg armor to help absorb the recoil from its powerful shoulder-mounted cannon. This feature allows the suit to remain stable and effective during sustained fire. Its mobility is somewhat compromised by its heavy artillery focus, but it compensates with a reasonable speed of 83 km/h, which, combined with a sensor range of 6,000 meters, allows it to engage enemies at a considerable distance. The GM Cannon also features a beam spray gun for mid-range combat and is equipped with a shield for added protection in close-quarter engagements. While it is primarily an artillery-focused unit, its overall design allows it to be flexible enough for various combat scenarios, although it is best utilized in roles that require long-range fire support.
The GM Cannon was deployed extensively during the One Year War in various theaters of conflict, including in North America and North Africa, where it supported Federation forces in key battles. The White Dingo Team, a special unit of the Earth Federation, famously used the GM Cannon in the harsh terrain of Australia, where it demonstrated its effectiveness in artillery and fire support roles. The suit’s solid performance in these diverse environments highlighted its adaptability and the versatility of its weapon systems. It also proved effective in the defense of Konpei Island during the early UC 0080s, a key moment in post-war mobile suit operations.
Beyond the standard RGC-80 GM Cannon, specialized variants were developed for particular needs. The RGC-80S GM Cannon Space Assault Type was an adaptation designed for use in space, equipped with additional thrusters for maneuverability in zero gravity and a more powerful 360mm rocket cannon. Another variant, featured in the Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt series, is the RGC-80 GM Cannon (Thunderbolt Ver.), which saw modifications for improved performance in the debris-filled environments of space combat, with added sensors and larger backpacks for better stability and performance in cluttered battlefield conditions.
Notable pilots of the GM Cannon include Lydo Wolf, Master Pierce Rayer, Leung Lee-Fai, Maximilian Berger, and Chap Adel, who each contributed to its legacy during its operational history. These pilots helped to cement the GM Cannon’s place as a key unit in the Federation’s arsenal, ensuring its continued use even as the war progressed and new mobile suit technologies emerged. Despite its somewhat niche role, the GM Cannon’s combination of artillery firepower, mobility, and defense capabilities made it a vital tool for the Federation during the One Year War, and its continued use into the UC 0080s demonstrates its enduring value as a reliable artillery mobile suit.
