RMS-179 GM II
The RMS-179 GM II is an upgraded version of the RGM-79 GM, developed by the Earth Federation Forces in the aftermath of the One Year War. Introduced in UC 0084, the GM II was designed to address the need for a more capable, versatile mobile suit as the Federation transitioned into post-war operations. It played a prominent role in the Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam series and continued to be featured in other Gundam media, such as Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn.
Standing at 18.1 meters tall and weighing around 58.7 metric tons, the GM II boasts a Minovsky-type ultracompact fusion reactor that generates 1,518 kW of power. This provides sufficient energy to operate its propulsion system, which includes four 15,500 kg rocket thrusters and ten vernier thrusters for improved maneuverability. The GM II’s armor is composed of titanium alloy ceramic composite, striking a balance between weight and protection. The mobile suit is also equipped with an advanced sensor suite, with a detection range of 8,800 meters, ensuring excellent targeting and situational awareness in combat.
The GM II’s armament includes two 60mm vulcan guns mounted in the head for defense against small targets, a beam saber stored in the backpack, and a beam rifle with a 1.9 MW power rating for ranged combat. For additional defense, the GM II can be equipped with a shield, making it adaptable to various combat scenarios. Its design emphasizes ease of maintenance, allowing it to be deployed efficiently and reliably on the front lines.
During the early stages of the Gryps War in UC 0087, the GM II was used by both the Earth Federation Forces and the Anti-Earth Union Group (AEUG), continuing to see action even as newer, more advanced mobile suits like the MSA-003 Nemo and the RMS-108 Marasai were introduced. The GM II remained in service for many years, even being deployed as late as UC 0096 during the conflict involving Zeon remnants attacking Federation strongholds such as Dakar and Torrington Base.
The legacy of the GM II continued through the development of newer mobile suits, including the RGM-86R GM III, which retained the GM II’s core attributes but incorporated further advancements to meet the demands of future combat. The GM II stands as a testament to the Earth Federation Forces’ ability to adapt and evolve, providing a reliable and capable mobile suit solution during the turbulent years following the One Year War.
