Ikuto Yamashita

Ikuto Yamashita (山下 いくと), born in 1965, is a renowned Japanese manga artist and mechanical designer celebrated for his intricate and revolutionary mecha designs. He made his debut in the animation industry with the 1988 Gainax OVA Gunbuster. Yamashita is most widely recognized for his work as the primary mecha designer for the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise. His creative vision was instrumental in developing the iconic, bio-mechanical appearance of the Evangelion units and Angels, blending organic and mechanical elements to create designs that redefined the mecha genre.

Beyond his design work, Yamashita is a manga artist whose representative works include the series Dark Whisper. He also authored the light novel series Neon Genesis Evangelion: ANIMA, which provides an alternate future for the Evangelion universe. His ongoing contributions to the industry were recently honored when he won the 57th Seiun Awards for his work on projects including the original anime Apocalypse Hotel. Throughout his career, he has collaborated extensively with Studio Gainax and director Hideaki Anno on various landmark projects.
