RX-178+FXA-05D Super Gundam
The RX-178+FXA-05D Super Gundam is a high-performance mobile suit configuration used by the AEUG during the Gryps Conflict in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. It is formed by combining the RX-178 Gundam Mk-II with the FXA-05D G-Defenser, a support flight unit developed by Anaheim Electronics to boost the Mk-II’s combat effectiveness. This combined form significantly enhances the Mk-II’s firepower, speed, and operational endurance, transforming it into a formidable unit capable of challenging the more advanced Titans mobile suits.
The Gundam Mk-II itself is an early post–One Year War design, notable for its use of the movable frame—a structure that allows for more fluid and human-like movement, setting the foundation for modern mobile suit engineering. However, the Mk-II lacks onboard high-powered weapons or transformation features, which becomes a limitation as the war progresses. To address this, the G-Defenser was designed to dock with the Mk-II, creating the Super Gundam form.
In Super Gundam configuration, the unit gains access to an array of new equipment. The most prominent is the long beam cannon mounted on the G-Defenser, which allows for long-range sniping and artillery roles. It also includes additional missile launchers, boosters, and propellant tanks, extending the unit’s mobility and operational time in space. The Super Gundam retains the Gundam Mk-II’s beam rifle, beam sabers, and vulcan pods, giving it a versatile loadout that balances ranged and close-quarters capabilities.
Piloted by Emma Sheen during the Gryps Conflict, the Super Gundam is deployed in key AEUG operations against the Titans. While it doesn’t possess the transformation systems of suits like the Zeta Gundam, it serves as a powerful support and assault unit, combining the proven Mk-II platform with heavy equipment to match or surpass the Titans’ newer models. Its effectiveness in combat, coupled with its modular upgrade approach, exemplifies AEUG’s resourceful use of limited technology to counter overwhelming opposition. The Super Gundam remains one of the most iconic support-type Gundam variants of the Universal Century.
