Mobile Suit Gundam: Zeonic Front
Mobile Suit Gundam: Zeonic Front, known in Japan as Zeonic Front: Kidō Senshi Gundam 0079 (ZEONIC FRONT ジオニックフロント 機動戦士ガンダム0079), is a tactical strategy and action video game released for the PlayStation 2 in 2001. Set during the One Year War within the Universal Century timeline, the game offers a unique perspective by placing players in control of the Midnight Fenrir Corps, an elite mobile suit special forces unit of the Principality of Zeon. This marked a significant departure from previous Gundam titles where players typically fought for the Earth Federation.
The gameplay blends third-person action with deep squad-based tactical elements. Players manage up to three teams of three mobile suits each, and prior to missions, they can pre-plan routes and set operational parameters on an overhead map. During combat, players can directly control one mobile suit while the others are managed by AI, with the ability to swap control between units on the fly. A critical aspect of the game is its focus on strategy over mechanical skill, requiring players to utilize different sensor types—radar, thermal, and sonar—to detect and outmaneuver Federation forces.
The narrative follows the Midnight Fenrir Corps through key battles, including the capture of California Base and the assault on Jaburo. The unit, led by characters such as Lt. Garret Schmitzer and Lt. Lou Roher, eventually faces the daunting challenge of the Earth Federation’s experimental Gundam. Known for its steep learning curve and gritty, realistic portrayal of mecha combat, Zeonic Front is regarded as a standout title for its intricate level design and the tension created by fighting from the perspective of the historically “antagonist” faction.
