Spider-Man
Spider-Man is a seminal superhero series created by writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko, first appearing in Marvel Comics’ Amazing Fantasy #15 in August 1962. The story follows Peter Parker, a brilliant but socially isolated teenager from Queens, New York, who gains superhuman abilities after being bitten by a radioactive spider. His powers include enhanced strength, speed, and agility, the ability to cling to surfaces, and a precognitive spider-sense that warns him of danger. Utilizing his scientific genius, Parker also develops mechanical web-shooters to traverse the city and ensnare enemies.
Initially using his powers for personal gain, Parker’s life is forever changed when his refusal to stop a thief leads to the murder of his Uncle Ben. This tragedy instills in him the series’ central moral theme: “with great power comes great responsibility”. As Spider-Man, he balances the ordinary struggles of young adulthood—such as financial hardship and complex relationships with characters like Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy—with the duties of a costumed crime-fighter. He faces a diverse gallery of iconic villains, including the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, and Venom. Over six decades, the series has expanded from its comic book origins into a massive global franchise encompassing numerous television shows, video games, and blockbuster film series.
