Charmander

Charmander (ヒトカゲ) is a bipedal, orange lizard-like Pokémon and one of the original starter species in the Pokémon franchise. Its Japanese name, Hitokage, is a combination of the words for fire (hi) and lizard (tokage). A defining characteristic is the flame at the tip of its tail, which serves as an indicator of its health and life force, burning brightly when the Pokémon is energetic.

In the Pokémon anime, one of the most prominent Charmander belongs to protagonist Ash Ketchum, who rescued it after it was abandoned by its previous trainer. This Charmander eventually evolved into Charmeleon and later Charizard, initially becoming disobedient before regaining its loyalty to Ash. Charmander is widely regarded as one of the most popular Pokémon species, although it is noted for being a challenging choice for beginners in the original Red and Blue games due to its elemental disadvantages against early-game gym leaders. Beyond video games and animation, the character has appeared in extensive merchandise and even inspired street names in Henderson, Nevada.
