Kaworu Nagisa

Kaworu Nagisa (渚 カヲル) is a major character in the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise, also known as the 17th Angel, Tabris. Introduced as the Fifth Child, he is sent to Nerv by Seele to replace Asuka Langley Soryu as the pilot of Unit-02. He possesses the strongest AT field ever detected, capable of blocking all physical interference, and can synchronize with any Evangelion unit at will. Despite his nature as an Angel intended to bring about humanity’s extinction, he exhibits deep affection and an immediate interest in Shinji Ikari, famously telling him that he was “born to meet him”. In the original series, he ultimately chooses to die at Shinji’s hands to allow the Lilim (humanity) to survive.

In the Rebuild of Evangelion film series, his role is expanded; he is designated as the First Angel and later the 13th, piloting Mark.06 and Evangelion Unit-13. He is depicted as a protective and caring figure who seeks to bring Shinji happiness, even taking on the burden of Shinji’s mistakes to prevent the Third Impact. Physically, he is characterized by his silver-grey hair and red eyes. His name, “Nagisa,” contains a pun on the Japanese word for “messenger” (shisha), reflecting his role as the final messenger of the Angels. Through various iterations, including manga and spin-offs, Kaworu remains a symbol of hope and unconditional acceptance for Shinji.
