Shinji Ikari
Shinji Ikari (碇 シンジ) is the main protagonist of the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise and the designated pilot of Evangelion Unit-01. As the “Third Child” and son of Gendo and Yui Ikari, he is a 14-year-old boy characterized by a shy, introverted, and deeply insecure personality stemming from childhood emotional trauma and abandonment by his father. Throughout the series and its various adaptations, Shinji struggles with his self-worth, his fear of being hurt by others, and the immense psychological pressure of piloting a giant bio-machine to defend humanity against beings known as Angels.
In the original series and the film The End of Evangelion, his journey focuses on his search for acceptance and his ultimate confrontation with his own traumas during the Human Instrumentality Project. The Rebuild of Evangelion film series presents an alternative trajectory, where he is initially similar to his anime counterpart but eventually matures into a more proactive figure who seeks to fix the world he inadvertently helped break. Ultimately, in Thrice Upon a Time, an adult Shinji is seen moving forward into a new world without Evangelions. His character is widely recognized for its realistic psychological depth, serving as a reflection of director Hideaki Anno’s own struggles with depression and as a commentary on the “otaku” subculture.
