Ippei Gyoubu
Ippei Gyoubu (形部一平) is a Japanese illustrator and mechanical designer known for bringing a sharp, graphic sensibility to modern mecha. Coming from a background in illustration and concept art, he moved into anime production in the early 2010s and quickly became a prominent voice in the Gundam sphere, contributing extensively to series such as Gundam Reconguista in G, Iron-Blooded Orphans, and The Witch from Mercury. His designs favor clean silhouettes, bold color blocking, and striking surface markings that read clearly in motion, giving machines a distinctive “industrial graphic” presence rather than pure realism. Gyoubu’s work often emphasizes how a machine will stage action—silhouette readability, transform or deploy moments, and emblematic details that support worldbuilding—so that the designs drive storytelling as much as they look cool. Beyond Gundam, he has provided mechanical concepts for other anime and games, continuing to blend product-design clarity with imaginative, futuristic forms.
