RGM-86R GM III
The RGM-86R GM III is a versatile and advanced mass-produced mobile suit developed by the Earth Federation Forces during the late Universal Century, specifically introduced in UC 0088. It was designed as an upgraded successor to the RGM-79R GM II to meet the evolving needs of space combat. The GM III is featured prominently in Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ and also appears in various other Gundam media, such as the Gundam Sentinel novel and Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn.
Standing at 18.6 meters tall and weighing approximately 56.2 metric tons, the GM III boasts several improvements over its predecessors, including enhanced mobility and firepower. It is powered by a Minovsky-type ultracompact fusion reactor, capable of generating 1,560 kW of power. The suit’s propulsion system features 81,200 kg of rocket thrusters, combined with eight vernier thrusters, which enable it to achieve a maximum acceleration of 1.45 G, making it one of the more agile units in its class.
The GM III’s armament suite is designed to provide both long-range firepower and close combat capabilities. It is equipped with two 60mm vulcan guns mounted in the head for defense against small targets, two beam sabers stored in the backpack for close combat, and a powerful beam rifle with a 2.8 MW power rating. For additional adaptability in various combat scenarios, the GM III can be outfitted with a shield, large missile launchers, and missile pods, allowing it to engage enemies with greater flexibility.
The GM III’s design emphasizes ease of maintenance and compatibility with existing Federation infrastructure, ensuring that it can be rapidly deployed and supported in a variety of operational theaters. This design philosophy helped the GM III become a reliable and effective mobile suit for various factions, including the Earth Federation Forces, Karaba, and pirates.
Notable pilots of the GM III include Bosch Weller and Gaius Zemela, both of whom demonstrated the mobile suit’s combat effectiveness during key battles. The GM III’s continued service throughout the UC timeline reflects its success and adaptability, solidifying it as a cornerstone of the Federation’s military forces.
The GM III’s legacy also extends to model kit enthusiasts, with the HGUC 1/144 RGM-86R GM III being a popular choice for collectors, offering a detailed and faithful representation of the mobile suit, complete with accessories like a beam rifle, shield, and missile pods.
