Mobile Suit Variations
Mobile Suit Variation (モビルスーツバリエーション), commonly abbreviated as MSV, is a prominent design series within the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise that debuted in 1983. It focuses on introducing alternate configurations, specialized variants, and prototype machines of existing mobile suits, primarily those from the One Year War era. Originally featured in a series of books and model kits (Gunpla), MSV aims to provide a more detailed, canonical look at the mechanical evolution and technical lineages within the Universal Century timeline. These designs often include extensive backstories for both the machines and their ace pilots, such as Johnny Ridden and the Black Tri-Stars, despite many of them never appearing in the original 1979 anime. The success of the MSV concept led to its repetition in later Gundam series like Zeta Gundam, Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, and even Alternate Universe series such as Mobile Suit Gundam SEED. MSV remains a significant part of Gundam lore, bridging gaps in the narrative by explaining how various mobile suit designs are strategically adapted for different combat environments.
