The Five Star Stories
The Five Star Stories (ファイブスター物語) is a Japanese science fiction manga series created by Mamoru Nagano, first serialized in 1986. Set in the distant future, the story takes place in the Joker Star Cluster, a region comprising four major planetary systems, with a fifth system, Stant, passing through every 1,500 years. The narrative spans across millennia, exploring complex themes of chivalry, politics, and the relationship between humans and artificial beings.
At the core of the series is Amaterasu, the immortal emperor of the Grees Kingdom, and his bride Lachesis, a genetically engineered humanoid known as a Fatima. These Fatimas serve as essential copilots for the Mortar Headds—massive mecha requiring superhuman reflexes to operate. The relationship between Amaterasu and Lachesis is central to the saga, representing the fusion of human and artificial intelligence. The series is known for its intricate world-building, with detailed histories, cultures, and technologies, and Nagano’s unique art style blending fantasy and science fiction.
The story’s non-linear structure spans multiple eras and characters, often intertwining personal destinies with cosmic conflicts. The Five Star Stories has been compiled into 18 volumes, with an English translation covering the first 10 volumes. The manga has also been adapted into a 66-minute anime film released in 1989. While it remains niche, the series has earned a dedicated fanbase for its complexity, elaborate mecha designs, and the fusion of genres that makes it a unique and influential work in the mecha and fantasy genres.
