FG #01 RX-78-2 Gundam

Released to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Mobile Suit Gundam, the 1/144 FG RX-78-2 Gundam was the very first kit in Bandai’s original First Grade line. Rather than reproducing the 1980 tooling, First Grade revisited the iconic RX-78-2 with a sharper late-1990s sculpt, simple snap-fit construction and improved articulation while keeping the compact, inexpensive character of the earliest 1/144 Gunpla.

The FG Gundam uses a straightforward plastic-on-plastic joint system with no polycaps. The head, shoulders, upper arms, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles are articulated, giving the completed model useful basic posing despite its intentionally simple construction. The two beam-saber hilts fitted to the backpack are removable, and two separate deployed beam sabers are included alongside the Gundam’s beam rifle and shield.

This is a particularly nostalgic kit for builders who enjoy the history of Gunpla or want a simple RX-78-2 as a painting project. Unlike most modern Gunpla, the kit is moulded entirely in white plastic; painting is therefore recommended if you want to reproduce the familiar white, blue, red and yellow anime colour scheme.
